The Old Derby Pattern Books
A Reconstruction of the Original Plate Pattern and Tea Pattern Books used at the Derby Porcelain Factory during the 18th and early 19th Centuries.
Pattern Books were created by most China manufacturers to be used by the painters and gilders to follow in the decoration of their wares. The Derby Porcelain Factory was no exception.

In Derby's case it had two separate books, one for tea wares and one for dinner/dessert services.

One can see how tastes altered over the years and the books also show the change in the factories fortunes. In Duesbury's time they were almost meticulously kept, but after his death the same care in sketching each pattern is not so consistent.

It has not been an easy task to piece the books back together and there are still some gaps - pages torn out or missing and sketches deteriorated over time. In some cases where a plate, dish or tureen, etc., has not been found to illustrate a pattern, a tea ware of identical pattern has been used.

My grateful thanks to all those who have helped, a full list of whom appears at the base of this page, but most especially to Derek Thomas. This task would have been impossible without his kind, unfailing support and vast knowledge.
